How to move your Blog to a new Domain
Move your Blog in a Search Engine efficient - and Customer friendly way
It may happen that you wish to move your WordPress blog to a new domain, for example from ‘yourdomain.com/blog’ to ‘myblog.com’.
Make sure you readership will not suffer from the change; inform your readers and make sure the feeds contain corresponding information to allow a shift to the new feeds.
In as much as Search Engines are concerned, it is necessary to clearly instruct robots to go and crawl your new site while stopping to crawl the previous domain. You want to preserve your listings and continue to profit from the work you have put into publishing and building an avtive readership.
In simple terms, we first prevent Robots to access our new domain. Then we move the data base containing our articles, categories, tags and other content. Now we install the new blog using the same settings as on the previous one.
We need now to modify all links which contained an element mentioning the old domain. This can be done easily with a Search and Replace plugin.
When everything is working you allow robots to crawl your new domain and you reirect the previous one to the new URI.
